Mathew Jessep is a commercial lawyer and athlete representative with specialist skills and experience in Sports, Esports, Media, Technology, and Entertainment Law in Australia and North America.
In June 2018 Mat joined the Sydney office of global law firm, DWF, where he specialises in Sports, Esports, Media, and Entertainment law, covering commercial, transactional, and governance issues.
As a commercial lawyer, Mat advises individuals, businesses, and organisations on transactions and matters involving a broad range of commercial legal issues, including start-up advice and assistance, intellectual property and brand equity protection, contracts and agreements, employment agreements and ongoing advice, corporate governance, commercial dispute resolution, licensing, and business structuring.
In one growing area of speciality, Mat has developed significant expertise in the high-growth esports sector, having advised players, teams, investors, and event organisers on a broad range of commercial transactions and legal matters since 2016. In 2017 Mat was a co-founding Board Member of the Esports Games Association Australia Ltd (EGAA) and became Interim CEO of that esports industry body in early 2018.
As a Sports, Media, and Entertainment lawyer, Mat has a solid track record of experience and expertise advising sporting bodies, teams, athletes, sponsors, and rights holders in the traditional sports space, as well as film producers, actors, entertainment agents, authors, publishers, and tech start-ups in the media and entertainment sectors.
Mat also has experience assisting athletes directly with career management, contract negotiations, and endorsement deal origination.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mat spent more than 10 years in the corporate sector in brand sponsorship and marketing roles. Mat also spent 2 years serving as an Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force.
Mat holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and a Diploma in Law.
Away from the office, Mat can usually be found looking for decent coffee and/or watching his kids play sport. On a really good day, Mat will be seen at a sports or esports event, with coffee, and his family.
